★Omeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid stomach produces. It does this by blocking a system in the cells of stomach called the proton pump. The proton pump works in the final step of acid production. When the proton pump is blocked, stomach makes less acid. This can help decrease symptoms.

Omeprazole is used to treat conditions caused by too much acid production in the stomach, such as:

• gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• erosive esophagitis (acid-related damage to the esophagus, the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach)
• astric (stomach) ulcers
• stomach infections caused by Helicobacter pyloribacteria.
